Currently, solar technology is only able to absorb 20% of the sun’s visible light. Though there is much speculation that we will be able to capture 60%-80% of those rays in the next ten years, there is no guarantee. So what is the next step for solar?
Presently, modern space crafts and satellites are operated almost entirely by solar power. Because the sun’s rays have not been filtered though the earth’s atmosphere, the solar yield is twice as strong. Thus, scientists have conceptualized an innovative method that will integrate modern solar technologies to help solve the ever-present energy crisis.
These scientists have proposed creating solar arrays that are anywhere from ten to twenty football fields in length. Solar arrays at that proportion will be capable of producing hundreds of thousands of kilowatts per hour!
The satellites will collect the energy and transmit down to earth via microwaves to various receivers all over the world. These satellites will be orbiting with the earth and will always be facing the sun, allowing for 24hr solar absorption. No longer will we have to worry about the limited solar immersion caused by clouds, pollution, or night time.
